Diabetic Eye Exams

Changes to the retina from diabetes, called diabetic retinopathy, is the leading cause of permanent blindness in working age adults. This is because most people with diabetic retinopathy are not aware that they have it until it is too late and permanent changes to the retina and macula have occurred.

If you have been diagnosed with diabetes, it is important to have a dilated retinal evaluation every year to ensure good retinal health. When diabetic retinopathy is caught early, it can be managed and vision loss can be prevented. However, if left unchecked and untreated, diabetic retinopathy can cause hemorrhaging in the eye, retinal detachments, glaucoma, and other permanent changes to the retina and your vision.

People with diabetes are also more likely to have cataracts at an earlier age and other ocular complications, even if your diabetes is well controlled. Our office utilizes advanced technology including optical coherence tomography (OCT) to monitor our diabetic patients for retinopathy and other ocular conditions related to diabetes.
