Cataracts
Cataracts form when the clear crystalline lens that sits behind your colored iris becomes yellowed and opaque with age. Nearly everyone needs cataract surgery at some point in their lives. In fact, cataracts are the leading cause of treatable vision loss and cataract surgery is one of the most common surgeries performed in the world. Sun exposure, genetics and other factors such as diabetes, smoking, using steroid medications and being highly nearsighted also play a role in the development and advancement of cataracts. Trauma to the eyes and other health conditions can also lead to different kinds of cataracts. Rarely, people are born with cataracts in one or both eyes.
In the early stages, cataracts often cause problems with glare, especially driving at night and/or in the rain. As cataracts progress, vision decreases until not even the best glasses or contact lens prescription can help. Color vision may also be affected due to yellowing of the crystalline lens. At this point, cataract surgery is required. During cataract surgery, a surgeon will remove your natural crystalline lens and replace it with an artificial lens implant. There are many options available for cataract implants. When you are ready for cataract surgery, our doctors can help you determine which lens option(s) may be best for you, although the ultimate decision is between you and your surgeon.
Our doctors are highly experienced at diagnosing and managing cataracts as well as performing pre-operative and post-operative cataract surgery care. We work with a number of skilled surgeons in the area and can help you choose which surgeon would be best for you and your needs.
