Retinal Conditions
The retina is a neurologic tissue that lines the inside of the back part of your eye like wallpaper. The retina contains photoreceptors called rods and cones that are responsible for allowing you to see. You can think of the retina like the film of a camera. The retina relies on an extensive network of blood vessels both above and below the retinal tissue to ensure the rods and cones have adequate oxygen and nutrition so that you can see your best.
Many different conditions of the eyes and body can affect the retina. Some of these conditions include:
- Diabetic Retinopathy (changes to the retina from diabetes)
- Hypertensive Retinopathy (changes to the retina from high blood pressure)
- Macular Degeneration
- Macular Edema (swelling of the central retina)
- Epiretinal Membrane
- Retinal Holes or Tears and Retinal Detachments
- Melanoma
- And many more!
While some of these issues will affect your vision, like macular edema and retinal detachments, many of these conditions can go undetected without a thorough retinal evaluation. Our doctors are skilled at performing retinal evaluations to ensure any problems are caught and treated as soon as possible, preventing permanent vision loss. Our office also utilizes advanced technology including wide-field, high resolution retinal photography and optical coherence tomography (OCT) to best monitor your retina.
